Delete image metadata

Clears EXIF metadata and other embedded information.

Reviewed practical guide

How to remove image metadata before sharing

Distinguish embedded fields from visible content and verify the result instead of trusting a filename alone.

Remove image metadata re-encodes an image without copying common EXIF and other metadata blocks. Depending on the source, this can remove camera model, capture date, GPS coordinates, embedded thumbnails and comments.

This operation does not anonymise visible pixels. A number plate, face, photographed address or screenshot containing personal data remains visible. It also cannot erase information retained by a publishing platform in its own database.

What result to expect

You will receive a re-encoded copy whose visible contents should be reviewed and whose metadata can be independently inspected.

When this is useful

  • Share a photograph without accidentally publishing its GPS coordinates.
  • Prepare website images without unnecessary camera information.
  • Create a public copy that is separate from the photographic master.

Checks before sharing

  • Inspect location, date, author, comments and embedded thumbnail with an independent tool.
  • Also review the visible image itself at full resolution.
  • Do not overwrite the source when its capture date or colour profile is needed in your archive.

Limitations to understand

  • Visible data is not removed and sensitive information is not detected by AI.
  • Re-encoding can change file size, colour profile or palette even when the image looks similar.
  • The destination platform may add identifiers or retain upload information of its own.

Frequently asked questions

Are GPS coordinates removed?

Re-encoding avoids copying the common EXIF block where GPS is usually stored. Always verify the output with an independent inspector.

Does this also remove a date from the filename?

No. Filenames are separate from embedded metadata. Rename the file when its name reveals information you do not want to share.

Is the image now anonymous?

Not necessarily. People, documents, locations and other identifiers may still be visible in the pixels.
