Reviewed practical guide

How to merge PDF files in the right order

A practical guide to preparing files, arranging every page and checking the merged document before sharing it.

Merge PDF creates one new document by copying the pages from the selected files in the order shown in the workspace. You can drag documents into position and inspect their thumbnails before processing. The result is downloaded as a separate PDF, so the source files are not overwritten.

Restricted PDFs that open without a password can be merged directly. If a document needs an opening password, enter it in the optional field. That password is used for the protected files in this job; unlock files with different passwords separately first.

What result to expect

You will receive a file named “pdf-unido.pdf” containing all pages consecutively in the visible order.

When this is useful

  • Package a proposal, its technical appendices and a cover into one attachment.
  • Collect monthly invoices or receipts in chronological order.
  • Turn separately exported chapters into one continuous document.

Checks before sharing

  • Prefix filenames with 01, 02 and 03 when preparing a large batch.
  • Correct page orientation before merging if any source was scanned sideways.
  • Keep the source files until the merged PDF opens correctly and its page count is confirmed.

Limitations to understand

  • Pages are copied, but document-level outlines, attachments and metadata are not combined into a new unified structure.
  • A digital signature applied to a source file should not be treated as a signature of the newly merged document.
  • PDFs with an opening password need that password in the workspace. If their passwords differ, unlock each file separately. Damaged PDFs may need repair.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the order before merging?

Yes. The tool uses the order visible in the workspace, so arrange and review it before processing.

Will page quality be reduced?

The operation copies pages and does not intentionally compress them. Unusual PDF features such as forms or transparency should still be checked in the result.

What happens to the source files?

They are not overwritten. A separate result is created and working files are handled under the temporary-file policy.
