Reviewed practical guide

How to turn every PDF page into a JPG or PNG image

Choose format and resolution for the intended use instead of selecting solely by file size.

PDF to images renders each page as a separate file and packages the set in a ZIP. You can choose JPG or PNG and a resolution from 72 to 300 DPI. More DPI means more pixels and detail, as well as a larger download and more processing work.

JPG is generally suitable for photographic pages and lightweight reference copies; PNG better preserves sharp text, screenshots and line art. Rendering creates a visual representation and does not retain selectable text, forms, links, layers or the PDF’s accessibility structure.

What result to expect

You will receive a ZIP containing one numbered image per page in the chosen format and resolution.

When this is useful

  • Create document thumbnails or visual previews.
  • Place a PDF page in a presentation or system that does not accept PDF files.
  • Prepare review images when links and selectable text are unnecessary.

Checks before sharing

  • Around 150 DPI is often a sensible screen-reading starting point, but validate it for your material.
  • Inspect small type and fine lines before rendering a long document at high resolution.
  • Keep the PDF as the source when search, accessibility or vector quality matters.

Limitations to understand

  • The output loses selectable text, links, forms, bookmarks and accessibility tags.
  • Complex transparency and colour profiles can look different after rendering.
  • A long document at 300 DPI can create a large ZIP and require substantial memory.

Frequently asked questions

Should I use JPG or PNG?

JPG is usually smaller for photographs. PNG often preserves text, diagrams and flat colours better, but may take more space.

What does DPI mean here?

It controls how many pixels are generated per inch of page. Increasing it adds detail up to the source limit and also increases file size.

Can I edit the text afterwards?

Not as text: every page is an image. Recovering editable text would require OCR followed by a careful review.
